A Forgotten Sunnah: Walking Barefooted
- Grounding is a prophetic cure.
A man from the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ traveled to Fadaalah bin ‘Ubayd while he was in Egypt
I have heard a hadeeth from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and I hope that you have some knowledge from Him about it.
He said: And what is it?
He said: Such and such. (Then) he said: Why do I see you dishevelled while you are the Leader of the land?
He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has forbidden us from indulging too much in the comforts of life
He said: Why don’t I see any shoes on you?
He said: The Prophet ﷺ used to command us to go barefooted sometimes
[Abu Daawud (3629)]
This (hadeeth) is a reminder about an unknown sunnah in the minds of many of the people and it is the sunnah of Walking without shoes
-sometimes-
It is a sunnah that many people are ignorant of save a few
And if some would try and implement this the people would see this as a strange affair
The Noble Messenger of Allah, Sallallahu alaihi Wasallam, said:--
"Islam started as something strange, and it will revert to its (old positions) of being strange. So, glad tidings to the stranger."
[Sahih Muslim].
Today, we have become so distant from Islam that the way in which the Prophet, alaihis-Salaat Was-Salaam, did some things appears strange to us. Even people who welcome Islam in their lives find Muslims behaving strangely, which on further investigation turns out to be the recommended behaviour in Islam. So, we should not shy away from being perceived as strangers.
Someone asked the Prophet, Sallallahu alaihi Wasallam, "Who are the Strangers"? He replied: "The ones who break away from their people for the sake of Islam."
The Prophet, alaihis-Salaat Was-Salaam, gave glad tidings to those who will be cut off from their people because they choose to follow Islam. Everybody else's lifestyle will have become so contrary to Allah's Wishes, that the person who follows Islam will appear strange and will be rejected.
We have the best example in the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). He brought light to his people, but they insisted on remaining in the darkness of kufr (disbelief) and ignorance. They accused him of being a sorcerer, soothsayer or madman (like the modern day labelling of a conspiracy theorist by the enemies of truth), but he was patient in calling them, and he did not get fed up of repeating his call, using different methods of calling individuals and groups, calling in secret and in the open, until he attained great success.
This Sunnah of walking barefoot is excellent as it confirms even Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) implied that the Earth is a cure. God is Great. This means the Prophet also recommended grounding!
Narrated `Aisha: The Prophet (ﷺ) used to say to the patient, "In the Name of Allah The earth of our land and the saliva of some of us cure our patient."
Sahih al-Bukhari 5745
