The Love of the Poor!
One of the most profound Prophetic Du'as is the one in which the Prophet ﷺ asked Allah to grant him a love for the poor:
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ...حُبَّ الْمَسَاكِين (الترمذي)
"O Allah! I ask that you grant me a love for the miskīn" [Tirmidhi].
The word 'miskīn' primarily applies to those who are without wealth, but its actual meaning is broader, as it encompasses all those whom society typically pities and the elite look down upon.
Therefore, this du'a indicates that a sign of faith is to have a genuine love for the downtrodden, the socially disadvantaged, and the economically underprivileged.
Is it not amazing that the Prophet of Allah ﷺ is asking Allah to grant him a love of the miskīn? And here we are, asking Allah to make us of the wealthy, and not concerning ourselves with a love of the poor!
But what is the wisdom in this request for a love of the underclass of society? Ibn Rajab comments that the love of the poor is the purest form of love for the sake of Allah: because such a person is not loved for wealth, or status, or fame, or any benefit.
Rather, a love of the poor indicates a love that is solely based on faith and a desire to help. It indicates one's own humility, and it removes any sign of arrogance from one's own heart. As well, loving the poor indicates that we will spend on them and alleviate their circumstances as much as possible.
Caring about society's outcasts is a prophetic ideal that should be an aspiration for all of us. Our hearts should be more attached to the poor than to the rich, for that is how we ourselves will achieve spiritual purity and increase in our own generosity.
May Allah grant us all a love of the masākīn!
