SINKING OF THE X PRESS PEARL WILL IMPACT SRI LANKA ECOLOGICALLY AND ECONOMICALLY
The tourism industry acts as the third largest foreign exchange earner in Sri Lanka. Every year, tens of thousands of tourists visit Sri Lanka for its pristine beaches and for the taste of seafood.
The fisheries sector contributes about 2 percent to GDP, and employs around one million people in total, according to fao.org.
Coral reefs are of major ecological importance; they house entire ecosystems, and they reduce the force of the waves hitting the coast.
The sinking of the X Press Pearl will impact all of these aspects. It will impact Sri Lanka ecologically and economically.
Plastic pellets in fish, and fish that have ingested the chemicals that were on the ship, could lead to mass dying off of fish, and also could accumulate in the human body, if those fish were ingested.
This disaster is causing acid rains, and the coastline is covered in microplastics.
This is the biggest marine disaster Sri Lanka has ever faced.
Had the authorities taken the proper measures, our coastline might have been saved. Our beaches will be blue, still, our sands will be the copper-coloured hue that earned our country the name "Thambapanni". Once known by many epithets including "The Pearl of The Indian Ocean", we are now trying to salvage one of our most precious resources.
Don't stop being angry over this.
