CRUSADERS SURRENDER TO SALAH AL-DIN AYYUBI, RECONQUEST OF JERUSALEM
The painting depicts the king of the Kingdom of Jerusalem, Guy of Lusignan (r. 1186-1192) surrendering to Salah al-Din after his defeat at the Battle of Hattin on July 4, 1187 CE. The victory of Salah al-Din in the Battle of Hattin was a very crucial one as it led to the Muslim reconquest of Jerusalem after 3 months.
After more than 2 months of the Battle of Hattin, Sultan Salah al-Din Ayyubi besieged the city of Jerusalem on September 20, 1187 CE. Balian of Ibelin surrendered the city to the Ayyubids on October 2, 1187 CE. Thus, Jerusalem once again came under the control of the Muslims.
Previously when Crusaders captured the city in 1099 CE from the Muslims, they massacred the Muslim and Jew population of Jerusalem. But when Salah al-Din reconquered it in 1187 CE, he ensured the safety and security of every citizen of Jerusalem irrespective of their faith. Even the defeated and captured king after short imprisonment was released by Salah al-Din.
For his generous attitude and kindness, Salah al-Din is not only respected by the Muslims but in the Western world also, he has been greatly admired.
The Italian poet Dante, in his Inferno, was bound to commit any non-Christian to hell but, in Salah al-Din’s case, he (Saladin) was consigned to Limbo alongside such great men as Plato and Aristotle.
