RESPONSE TO SRI LANKAN LEADERS REACHING OUT TO MUSLIM NATIONS AND GROUPS ON THE EVE OF THE UN HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL VOTE
Al-Othaimeen praised the Sri Lankan President’s phone call and his willingness to open up and reach out to international organizations and welcomed the decision of the Government of Sri Lanka on the right of Muslims to bury their dead in accordance with the Islamic rites.
The Secretary-General reaffirmed the OIC’s keenness to follow up the conditions of Muslim communities and defend their rights in non-OIC member states.
He added that he was concerned about the rights of Muslims in Muslim-minority countries.
The Geneva Human Rights Council is scheduled to vote today (22) on a resolution submitted by several countries regarding Sri Lanka.
It is reported that the election will be held after 3.00 pm today (Sri Lanka time).
The UN Human Rights Council will vote today (22) on a resolution on Sri Lanka.
Relevant Accountability 40/1 calls for action to be taken to promote human rights in line with the implementation of Resolution 30/1.
The motion also commends the government's ongoing infrastructure development, demining and resettlement of displaced persons.
Of the 193 countries represented at the United Nations, 47 have the right to vote at the Geneva Human Rights Council. Many of these countries, including Pakistan, are currently voting in favor of Sri Lanka.

The referendum was to be held today in connection with the resolution against Sri Lanka.
A resolution on Sri Lanka was to be put to a vote at the ongoing UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.
However, reports suggest that the referendum has been postponed until tomorrow due to confusion over the agenda.
According to local sources in Geneva, countries are likely to vote in favor of the resolution to be submitted to the UN Human Rights Council, ie against Sri Lanka.
