MANY RESOLUTIONS BY THE GOVERNMENT TARGETING THE SRI LANKAN MUSLIM COMMUNITY FROM 5 TO 13! - AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL
Amnesty International fears that if no precautionary measures are taken in Sri Lanka, incidents of human rights abuses targeting the Muslim community could escalate and that efforts to ensure lasting peace could be hampered.
Amnesty International said in a statement that the Sri Lankan Muslim community was being targeted and increasingly marginalized. The report further states:
Some recent decisions by the Sri Lankan government have targeted the Muslim community and marginalized it.
It has been observed that the ideas, resolutions and guidelines issued by the Government in the Cabinet are discriminatory against the Muslim community which constitutes 9% of the total population of Sri Lanka.
Examples include the recent decision by the government to forcibly cremate the corpses of victims of the corona virus, and violence against the Muslim community.
We look at the current human rights situation in Sri Lanka and the potential for further violence in the future.
A statement issued by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights on Sri Lanka echoed such concerns. It is also noteworthy that various parties have urged the Sri Lankan government to suspend new arrests under the Prevention of Terrorism Act until international law is amended accordingly.
We fear that if no precautionary measures are taken in this regard, incidents of human rights violations targeting the Muslim community in Sri Lanka may increase and efforts to ensure lasting peace may be hampered.
During the 9 days from the 5th to the 13th of this month, resolutions, cabinet ideas and proposals made by the government targeting the Muslim community were reported.
The cabinet's idea of banning their burqas and niqabs, the cabinet's idea of banning madrassa schools, monitoring of all Islamic texts published in the country, guidelines for ethnic and religious fundamentalist acts and rehabilitation of perpetrators of violence have also been reported.
